Despite Court Order, DHS Releases Names of Just 22 Mar-a-Lago Visitors
17 September, 2017, 14:34
The Trump administration on Friday turned over 22 names related to the Japanese prime minister's visit to Mar-a-Lago with the president, while still withholding all other visitor records to the president's exclusive Florida resort. "The government seriously misrepresented their intentions to both us and the court", Bookbinder said in a statementposted to CREW's site.
Trump's habit of visiting his properties has generated newfound public interest in who patronizes those establishments. This payment, made with a USA government charge card, constitutes the first documented violation by President Trump of the Constitution's Domestic Emoluments Clause.
"The government does not believe that they need to release any further Mar-a-Lago visitor records", said CREW.
The government's payment to Trump's private Florida resort comes as the president faces longstanding concerns about his conflicts of interest - and, according to Property of the People'sOperation 45 project, "constitutes a direct, profitable payment from a USA government agency to a business personally owned by Donald Trump".
CREW Executive Director Noah Bookbinder described the move as "spitting in the eye of transparency".
In a letter accompanying the released visitor logs, Department of Justice attorneysChad Readler, acting assistant attorney general, and Joon Kim, the acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of NY, said the other records were not subject to FOIA. "We will be fighting this in court".
In ongoing but separate litigation, the Justice Department has agreed with Dillion and argued that hotel transactions are business transactions, unrelated to the president's office, and thus not emoluments.
Coutinho returns but Liverpool frustrated by Burnley
But from his point of view it will be great for him to get some club football under his belt going into the worldwide games. It has been a tough week for Liverpool , who were flogged 5-0 by Manchester City a week ago before being held by Sevilla .
However, after requesting more time to handle the request, the Trump administration on Friday released only a list of 22 visitors from Japanese Prime Minister Shinzō Abe's Mar-a-Lago meeting with the president, and claimed that all other records were exempt from the FOIA requests. Trump spent seven of his first fourteen weekends at Mar-a-Lago, triggering what cost and ethics concerns among experts and watchdog groups.
He has also golfed with undisclosed partners - an activity aides rarely confirm despite requests from White House reporters to know when he golfs and who joins him on the course.
Another advocacy group, Property of the People, had more luck with its FOIA request looking into U.S. Coast Guard records on expenses surrounding Trump properties.
The 22 names were released after liberal government watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington - along with the National Security Archive and the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University - filed a lawsuit seeking the logs.
The Obama administration released White House visitor logs beginning in September 2009, after four lawsuits by CREW.
