The US military confirmed on Thursday that an American fighting in Syria for the Islamic State has been taken into custody.

A USA citizen fighting for ISIS reportedly has surrendered or been captured in Syria and is being held by US -partnered forces.

Another U.S. military spokesman, Army Maj.

The U.S. -led coalition said Saturday the strike was on a target east of the Euphrates River in Syria near Dayr Az Zawr, a position known by Russian Federation to contain SDF fighters and coalition advisors.

USA -led coalition forces had harried the convoy with constant aerial surveillance and air strikes and took out 40 vehicles and 85 fighters looking to reach it.

On Thursday, the chief spokesman for the USA military command referred all questions about the news.

But the fighter captured this week is the first American captured since President Trump took office, presenting a test of how Trump will handle US citizens suspected of terrorism overseas.

Then-FBI Director James Comey estimated in late 2015 that more than 200 Americans had tried to join the militants in Syria or provided support to those who joined.

Troops kill 18 Burundian refugees in Congo
Six members of the Congolese security forces were killed in the clashes, Congolese army spokesman Dieudonne Kasereka said. In the wake of the killings, Burundi's Foreign Minister Alain Aimé Nyamitwe took to Twitter demanding answers.

He added, however, that as the two groups converge on the Islamic State position from opposite sides, it will get more hard to stay out of each other's way.

While a few others have defected or been captured, Hughes said this new fighter could provide valuable intelligence.

In June, a U.S. man who had traveled to Raqqa in December 2015 was convicted of helping IS.

The strikes had only hit targets in areas under the control of Islamic State, he said.

Russia's Foreign Ministry said on early Sunday morning that U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had phoned Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Saturday to discuss the Syria situation and how the "anti-terrorism" battle on the ground was playing out.

The American fighter, whose identity was not released, is not the first American ISIS fighter captured on the battlefield.

During his campaign, Trump opposed President Barack Obama's determination to close the Guantanamo prison; 41 prisoners remained there at the end of his term, and none have been transferred since.
