ASL interpreter warned about pizza, bears and monsters during Hurricane Irma briefing

Manatee County yet to decide storm debris collection An On-Air Interpreter Has Been Accused Of Signing Gibberish During Hurricane Irma

The former president of the National Association of the Deaf knew right off the bat that something wasn't right.

Manatee County leaders asked Marshall Greene to pitch in shortly before they were to address the public with "crucial" information, New York Post said in a report. So officials asked an employee who knew limited sign language to help, but when he began incorrectly interpreting words like "pizza", "monster" and "bear" during an evacuation order, the deaf audiences watching were outraged.

The operator of a company that provides deaf interpreters to Manatee County told WPTV that it was "horribly unnerving" for her to watch the press conference. Of course, given that the press conference turned into a gesticulatory Mad Lib involving bears scarfing pizza during a flood, that assessment seems to have been a little off base.

This sign language interpreter was not one of them.

"Everybody was talking about it on social media, everyone was shocked, asking leaders in the deaf community to do something about it", he told local news channel WFLA.

"I knew something went horribly wrong", Charlene McCarthy told WFLA.

I covered him a good bit at West Point High School and saw him seem to get stronger the more carries he got as the game went on. Bryant closed the half hitting 17-of-27 passes for 238 yards and a touchdown with 12 carries for 35 yards and another score.

Wagner said Greene also fell foul of basic good practice for interpreters by wearing a bright yellow shirt, thereby making his hands less visible to deaf viewers.

County leaders said they were "in a pinch" when looking for an interpreter.

On the county's video, Sandra Roche commented, "Who is this person you are using as a sign language interpreter?"

While non-ASL speakers can't usually tell a fraud from the real thing, members of the deaf community in Manatee County, Florida are complaining that, on September 8, county officials employed a non-fluent interpreter to update them on safety concerns regarding Hurricane Irma, including information about mandatory evacuations.

County officials say they have learned from the mistake.

The deaf community wants an apology from the county.
