UN Security Council steps up sanctions on North Korea

The United Nations (U.N.) Security Council is slated to look at a new set of sanctions against North Korea, Monday in New York City, and they are not happy about it.

An initial draft of the United Nations sanctions called for a ban on all oil and natural gas exports to North Korea, as well as a freeze on all foreign financial assets of the government and Kim Jong Un. Both Russia and China, as permanent members, wield veto power.

"The world will witness how (North Korea) tames the United States gangsters by taking a series of actions tougher than they have ever envisaged", the foreign ministry said in a statement carried by the official KCNA news agency.

The 111-page report was written before North Korea's sixth and most powerful nuclear test last Sunday and its latest launch of a powerful new intermediate-range ballistic missile over Japan.

The United States and its allies argue that tougher sanctions will pile pressure on Kim's regime to come to negotiate an end to its nuclear and missile tests.

"If it proves it can live in peace, the world will live in peace with it", Haley told the council after the new sanctions had been adopted.

But the NSSC said it had detected xenon-133, a radioactive isotope that does not occur naturally and which has in the past been linked to North Korea's nuclear tests.

Britain's U.N. Ambassador Matthew Rycroft, who backs "robust" new sanctions, said Thursday that the US proposals to ban all oil imports and textile exports and prohibit North Koreans from working overseas - which helps fund and fuel the country's nuclear and missile programs - are "a proportionate response" to its "illegal and reckless behavior".

The question arose as Sanders defended Trump's decision to fire Comey earlier this year, a choice Trump's former chief strategist called a mistake this week.

The latest sanctions resolution also bans exports to North Korea of natural gas liquids and light crude condensate, a natural gas by-product.

Rep. Eliot Engel, the committee's top-ranking Democrat, supported the pressure campaign but strongly criticized President Donald Trump's commentary on the North Korean crisis, which he said was making matters worse.

"It mainly aims at limiting North Korea's foreign exchange revenue and cutting off the foreign exchange (supply) that it needs to develop its nuclear plans".

Under the measure, countries are authorized to inspect ships suspected of carrying banned North Korean cargo but must first seek the consent of the flag-state.

"Up to now, the Chinese and the Russians have tried to keep on giving the US just enough to keep Trump playing the UN game", said Richard Gowan, an expert on the UN at the European Council for Foreign Relations.

"This is money that North Korea will not be able to put towards its illegal nuclear and missile programmes", Mr Brownlee says. "It doesn't seem much time is left before North Korea achieves its complete nuclear armament", the prime minister told a meeting of defense ministers in Seoul Thursday. However, the restrictive measures failed to prevent North Korea from conducting further tests.

Pyongyang has warned Washington that the United States would face the "greatest pain and suffering" as a "due price" for leading the sanctions charge.
