Sens. Gillibrand & Collins Want To Reverse The Trans Military Ban

Bipartisan Senate Amendment To Protect Transgender Soldiers Sends Trump Reeling Senators File Amendment to Delay Trans Military Ban
Preston Stone | 13 September, 2017, 04:30

The Gillibrand-Collins amendment needs 60 votes to pass, and they have said they don't know if they have those votes.

Trump announced his transgender ban in a July tweet, intending to reverse a 2016 Obama administration policy that ended the ban on service by transgender men and women.

The amendment was attached to a big defense bill, the National Defense Authorization Act, that allocates nearly $700 billion for the Department of Defense.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, has joined Sen.

The amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act would specifically express to Congress that all qualified individuals who meet the standards to enlist should be allowed to serve in the military. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Susan Collins (R-ME) would stop the military from kicking out transgender service members exclusively due to their gender identity, according to a press release sent out by GIllibrand's office Monday evening.

The amendment also does not mention the issue of transition-related health care, presumably an attempt to gain support among Senate Republicans.

ESPN calls Jemele Hill's anti-Donald Trump rant 'inappropriate'
ESPN has taken to Twitter to comment on host Jemele Hill calling President Trump "a white supremacist ". But ESPN's guidelines to talent about addressing political issues have grown increasingly complicated.

McCain said in a statement last month it would be "a step in the wrong direction" to discharge transgender individuals exclusively on the basis of gender identity, and the Pentagon should complete its study first before any decisions are made about new recruits.

Collins introduced a bipartisan amendment with Sen.

The Obama administration set up a process for the Pentagon to begin taking in new transgender recruits, and in June Mattis had said he needed six more months to study the impact of the move.

The bipartisan amendment would prohibit the Department of Defense from discharging members of the military based entirely on their gender identity.

Collins was the lead Republican in the fight to end Don't Ask, Don't Tell.

Gillibrand and Collins were also both at the forefront of repealing "don't ask, don't tell," the policy that allowed gay and lesbian service members to be discharged due to their sexual orientation.
