Pizza Hut manager threatens employees over evacuating during Hurricane Irma

The note also told employees, in bold, that they "must" return within 72 hours of evacuating.

A Pizza Hut spokesperson told Business Insider that one manager at a single location was responsible for the note, which violated the chain's guidelines. "If evacuating, you will have a 24-hour period before storm "grace period" to not be scheduled", the memo read. The memo had statements written in it, workers whoever if fails to the assigned shifts at job would be further considered a "no show/no call" and a written document will be issued regarding it.

A memo circulated in the Jacksonville location.

It did not disclose if the manager had been punished for the note.

Governor Rick Scott also urged employers in Florida on Friday to "be compassionate with your employees as they prepare for this storm and evacuate", according to Snopes.

In the recent wake of the destruction left behind hurricanes Harvey and Irma, we've seen countless stories of people in the affected areas following their "better angels" by making decisions that take into account the safety and well-being of others.

In a statement to USA TODAY, Pizza Hut spokesman Doug Terfehr called the memo an "isolated incident by an employee who showed very poor judgement", and said the franchise's operator addressed the manager over the issue.

He said the manager "elected to add a few things on their own" to the guidelines provided by the company to franchise restaurants.

Evacuating a hurricane just 24 hours before it hits could be a risky move.

"If you do it later, you may be caught in a flood of traffic trying to leave the area", Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez said last Wednesday. Miami Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez urged Florida residents to get out in advance on Wednesday night, saying, "You may find yourself in a auto during a hurricane, which is not the best place to be".
