A copy of the arrangements was also produced in court. "The prima facie verification with known sources of income has indicated discrepancy and therefore is taken up for further investigation which may include reference to the assessing officer for making assessment", the CBDT said in its affidavit filed before a Bench of Justices J Chelameswar and S Abdul Nazeer.

The petitioner said an analysis of assets declared during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and 2016 Rajya Sabha elections, as well as elections to Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, Assam and West Bengal assemblies, revealed "abnormal increase" in assets of many members of Parliament and assemblies. The court was hearing a petition filed by NGO, Lok Prahri, seeking direction to the government to make it mandatory for candidates to make public sources of their assets along with the assets of their spouses and dependents while filing nomination paper for elections.

In its affidavit, the CBDT has said that "the election affidavits filed by the candidates are self disclosed documents which are available in public domain".

The court had earlier questioned the government if any investigations were conducted into discrepancies in assets disclosed by leaders in their poll affidavits and income tax returns. The CBDT also claimed to have periodically shared the probe status and result with the Election Commission.

Can UN Sanctions Bring North Korea On Negotiating Table? US Hopeful
In any such talks, the first issue that Beijing may wish to talk about is who would control North Korea's nuclear weapons arsenal. Despite global efforts to stop North Korea's missile program, the country continues testing its ballistic missiles.

On Tuesday, Attorney General KK Venugopal, representing Gurpreet Shah Singh, Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax, CBDT, submitted that as arranged between the CBDT and ECI, verification of candidates was done as per the Income Tax Act, 1961.

The Supreme Court was also informed that the initial inquiry in the matter against some of the lawmakers is underway.

It had asked the government to file a detailed affidavit before it in this regard by September 12.
