Korea Slams New UN Sanctions, Warns US of 'Greatest Pain'

Pyongyang's envoy to the United Nations accused Washington of opting for "political, economic and military confrontation".

A 2016 meeting between Ri Su-yong, North Korea's foreign minister at the time, and President Xi Jinping led to a rare photo-op of the Chinese leader with a senior figure from Pyongyang but yielded few results.

The UN sanctions are an attempt to starve the country of fuel and income for its weapons programmes.

North Korea was condemned for conducting its sixth nuclear test on September 3, which it said was of an advanced hydrogen bomb.

United States disarmament ambassador Robert Wood took the floor to say the Security Council resolution "frankly sent a very clear and unambiguous message to the regime that the global community is exhausted, is no longer willing to put up provocative behaviour from this regime".

"The forthcoming measures to be taken by the DPRK will cause the United States the greatest pain and suffering it had ever gone through in its entire history".

"Instead of making [the] right choice with rational analysis. the Washington regime finally opted for political, economic and military confrontation, obsessed with the wild dream of reversing the DPRK's development of nuclear force - which has already reached the completion phase". This was the product of negotiations with China, the key player here and North Korea's main trading partner, as well as with Russian Federation and the other Security Council members. The vote stopped short of the initial proposal, which included an outright ban on oil.

- Limits on imports of crude oil and oil products.

His comments were made as new pictures showed Kim Jong Un attending an event in honour of the country's nuclear scientists and technicians.

"I don't know if it has any impact, but certainly it was nice to get a 15 to nothing vote".

Pizza Hut manager threatens employees over evacuating during Hurricane Irma
He said the manager "elected to add a few things on their own" to the guidelines provided by the company to franchise restaurants. The note also told employees, in bold, that they "must" return within 72 hours of evacuating .

"These banks are not complying with the Security Council", said Representative Ed Royce, the Republican chairman of the committee.

"The DPRK has developed and perfected the super-powerful thermo-nuclear weapon as a means to deter the ever-increasing hostile moves and nuclear threat of the USA and defuse the danger of nuclear war looming over the Korean peninsula and the region".

According to a recent study by the Nautilus Institute think-tank, a massive cutback in the flow of oil from China would definitely hurt the North Korean economy, and especially average citizens. The three previous administrations naively thought we could talk the North Korean regime out of its pursuit of nuclear weapons, which, to repeat, is the main reason for existence. "The choice is theirs".

The Security Council resolution approved a watered-down version compared with what the United States and its allies had sought: a full embargo on North Korea's crucial crude oil supply, which would have crippled the country.

Monday's resolution was the ninth one unanimously adopted by the United Nations since 2006.

"We wanted those who would be inclined to water down the text to own that position", said the USA official. Some members of the ruling Democratic Party echoed the call last week, with Rep. Jung Sung-ho saying that an "all-out" change to Seoul's North Korea policy was needed.

The resolution, including a total ban on North Korea's seafood exports, was adopted in response to its launches of two intercontinental ballistic missiles in July.

North Korea's sixth nuclear test once again puts China's relationship with its troublesome neighbour under the spotlight.

Monday's vote is seen as a key test of resolve for the council, which united last month to adopt a resolution meant to reduce the impoverished country's export earnings by up to a billion dollars. If it proves it can live in peace, the world will live in peace with it, ' she added.
