Troubled German airline Air Berlin, which entered preliminary insolvency proceedings last month, has cancelled more flights as it reduces its long-haul fleet. A decision on the fate of Air Berlin could come as quickly as September 21, three days before the German national election.

Over 100 national and worldwide flights were to be grounded, affecting schedules at major German airports including in Berlin, Dusseldorf and Munich, reports Efe news.

As Air Berlin teeters on the brink of collapse, thousands of its passengers have had their travel plans wrecked by a "sick-out" involving flight crew.

Chief executive Thomas Winkelmann said the pilots in question were "playing with fire".

On Sunday his company Intro offered 50 million euros immediately for the stricken airline, with up to 450 million euros of further payments "depending on performance", he said. He states: "We are in the middle of final talks with potential investors".

They announced the cancellation of more than 100 flights on Tuesday. Stable operations are a prerequisite for the success of these negotiations.

In mid-August, Air Berlin, the second largest German airline, filed for bankruptcy following the refusal of the Etihad Airways, which holds a 29.2-percent stake in the airline, to continue providing it with financial support.

Germany's giant services sector union Verdi on Tuesday expressed solidarity with the absent pilots and warned that more workers could call in sick.

"That's the only way we can secure as many jobs as possible", he added.
