More than 6.7 million Florida homes and businesses are now without power after Hurricane Irma moved through the state, according to the state's emergency management division.

Some 6.5 million people, about a third of the state's population, had been ordered to evacuate southern Florida as the storm approached the USA mainland after pummelling Cuba with 36ft-tall (11m) waves and ravaging several smaller Caribbean islands. The most extensive damage was likely in the Naples area, but a full assessment was ongoing.

Florida Power & Light, which provides power to an estimated 4.9 million accounts across the state, had about 3.6 million outages as of Monday morning, according to S&P Global Platts.

Irma weakened to a tropical storm Monday morning, a day after hitting the state as a Category 4 hurricane.

Delta Air Lines, which is based in Atlanta, said that it was closely monitoring Irma's track and "heavy winds and rain Monday [are] expected to impact some flights".

Elsewhere, Hurricane Katia was also downgraded to a tropical storm after lashing Mexico and leaving two people dead. It was expected to cross into Georgia in the afternoon, leaving potentially unsafe storm surges in its wake.

"Strong winds and flash flooding still a major risk with the storm as it moves into north Florida and toward Georgia over the next 24 hours", the center said.

President Donald Trump approved a "major disaster" declaration in Florida on Sunday, authorising "federal funding to flow directly to Floridians impacted by Hurricane Irma".

For all of their daring-do at the edge of Irma's eye, the pair did actually manage to walk away with some interesting results. Irma's current projected path would see it cross the eastern Florida Panhandle into southern Georgia on Monday afternoon before heading into eastern Alabama.
