The push to expand the company's charging network comes as Tesla rolls out the earliest batches of Model 3 sedans, a cheaper alternative to the company's flagship Model S that is meant to help transform the company into a mass market automaker. Late past year, the company announced that Teslas purchased after January 15 or delivered after April 15 would no longer receive unlimited, complimentary charging from the network's stations. The expansion is in preparation for the first mass-market vehicle the company has produced.
Tesla is surging higher after announcing the next generation of its Superchargers, aimed at dense cities.
American urban dwellers are in luck: Owning a Tesla has just gotten easier. The initiative will start with new Superchargers in downtown Chicago and Boston.
The new stations take up less space and are easier to install than Tesla's previous Supercharger stations, which are mostly along highways or at hotels. Shopping malls, grocery stores, and downtown regions are the primary targets for additional charging capabilities.
Tesla doesn't want owners to use the Supercharger network for daily charging. This shouldn't change even if two cars are plugged into adjacent Superchargers. Tesla now owns and operates 951 supercharger stations worldwide. Each auto comes with an adapter to plug the vehicle into a regular household outlet. It can charge up to 52 miles per hour, but for those who can charge overnight it's not a problem.
The new Superchargers have a more compact design than the existing units, but according to Tesla, they can recharge at the same pace.
