Other airlines were waiting until the storm's path and potential impact becomes more clear, but Hurricane Irma could have an impact on the entire country when it comes to air travel.

Almost 700 flights were canceled Monday at Miami and Fort Lauderdale. American Airlines flight AA 4723 to Washington (DCA) scheduled for 6:20 p.m. and Delta Airlines flight DL 1964 to Atlanta at 6:40 p.m. have both been canceled.

Neighboring Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport was also set to remain closed on Monday.

JetBlue and Southwest said flights will be reduced or canceled until at least Wednesday.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world, accommodating 100 million passengers every year.

There was relief and happy reunions at DFW Airport Saturday as people flew in from Florida, seeking refuge from Hurricane Irma.

As the powerful storm threatened to rip through the Florida coast by Sunday, airlines ramped up the number of flights available out of south Florida airports, where operations were likely to temporarily cease through the weekend and beyond.

Delta Air Lines, which is based in Atlanta, said that it was closely monitoring Irma's track and "heavy winds and rain Monday [are] expected to impact some flights".

At least one worldwide carrier was flying Monday in a jet filled with the staff needed to get its ticketing and flight operations running again.

Florida's largest airport said limited operations will resume at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, September 12. The normal operation to and from Charlotte is expected to resume on Tuesday. Delta is retaining its caps on ticket prices, limiting fares to $99 in coach and up to $399 in first class for single nonstop flight between Caribbean, Florida and Southeast coastal cities to other Delta destinations.

Twenty-seven of those departures were scheduled for Sunday and included American Airlines, United and Southwest flights. Check with your airline before arriving at an airport to book or change travel. The current travel alert (aa.com/travelalerts) allows customers whose travel plans may be impacted by Hurricane Irma to rebook without change fees. If you have booked a flight between September 5 and September 30 and wish to reschedule, you can file a travel waiver with the company and the change fee and any difference in airfare will be waived between September 5 and November 15. Those cancellations accounted for about a third of the entire day's schedule there, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware.
