The cause of the fire, which burned down one dormitory of the Moi Girls school, is not known.

"We were sleeping and a girl woke us up and said that our hostel was burning".

The injured, who are more than 50, have been admitted to Kenyatta National Hospital and Nairobi Women's Hospital, with close to 40 students having been treated and discharged.

The school, which has 1,183 students, has been closed for two weeks to facilitate investigations.

Opposition chief Raila Odinga has send his condolences to the affected families and also asked the govt to expedite investigations into the cause of the fire.

"Our children don't have phones in school so I rushed here because as a parent I'm anxious, but we have yet to be told where our children are", said parent Joyce Mwambia.

A statement from his office on Saturday evening said the death toll had risen from seven to eight.

This comes barely days after students opened school and Form Four students are expected to commence their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams on Friday next week.

Last year, at least 126 high schools were struck by arson in what appeared to be protests by students over the shortening of holidays and the limiting of visits by parents.
