Late flurry secures win for underwhelming England in Malta

England's lead remained unchanged with three qualifiers left because second-place Slovakia beat Slovenia 1-0 in Trnava thanks to a bundled close-range goal by Adam Nemec in the 81st minute.

Perhaps the evening would have taken a different complexion if Kane's early header had not been kept out by a fine save from the Maltese goalkeeper, Andrew Hogg.

England's Jordan Henderson and Malta's Zach Muscat (right) battle for the ball.

With five minutes to play Bertrand sealed the win for England with his first global goal, as his effort from 25 yards bounced under Hogg.

Bertrand's long-range strike - his first worldwide goal - added gloss five minutes before time, beginning a Malta collapse that soon saw Welbeck and Kane score.

In a drab affair, it took England 53 minutes to break the deadlock through Harry Kane.

Donald Trump is the first president elected in modern memory who is not beholden to a variety of special interests . Trump won Pennsylvania a year ago by roughly 44,000 votes after a recount was conducted in the Keystone State.

England manager Gareth Southgate has three other goalkeepers at his disposal in Joe Hart, Jack Butland and Tom Heaton, so has not drafted in a replacement.

But despite the one-sided nature of the final scoreline, whatever hope some might have had of England having a relatively successful time of it in Russian Federation next summer will not have been increased on the strength of this showing.

The half-time whistle immediately followed, as did a lot of boos from the away fans. Danny Welbeck added another in injury time from a Kane cross, then the number nine added another soon after while Malta's players chased him at half-pace in the hope he would kick the ball out as an opponent laid on the floor.

Elton John's "Candle in the Wind" echoed around a largely bemused ground, where the unthinkable almost happened six minutes after the restart.

It was an effort that belatedly jolted England into life.

A third arrived as the clock struck 90 minutes and Malta's defence gave up. The home side hadn't been able to produce any more. That apart, however, it was hard to feel too encouraged by the nature of what came in the first 85 minutes on a night perhaps most memorable for the sight of England's supporters taking down their flags and heading towards the exits midway through the second half.
