HBO Offered Hackers $250000 To Prevent Leaks

The hackers claim to have 1.5 terabytes of data stolen from HBO HBO Hackers Leak Email From Network That Offers Them $250000

HBO did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Variety cited sources as saying that the e-mail was worded in this way to stall for time while it tries to assess the situation.

According to Hollywood Reporter, the $250,000 would be a show of good faith for extending the group's initial deadline for a ransom payment.

"It's interesting that they're spinning it as a bug bounty programme", said Pablo Garcia, chief executive of FFRI North America.

But officials in Guam, the tiny island territory that Kim Jong Un has threatened to attack, aren't keeping citizens in the dark. The president called the USA military "incredible, "rock solid" and "the best in the world by a factor of five".

The first HBO hack became publicly known on July 31. The email indicates a negotiation between the network and the hackers. "That's a game we're not going to participate in".

The offer apparently failed to satisfy the attackers who have demanded a ransom of millions of dollars and are threatening to release more files from what is claimed to be a massive data breach.

Last month, HBO CEO Richard Plepler revealed that the network was hacked, compromising shows such as "Game of Thrones", "Insecure" and "Westworld". There were also internal documents, including a report of legal claims against the network and job offer letters to top executives. An automated response was returned with an image of the HBO "bounty" offer, Reuters said.

When Netflix refused to pay, the hacker posted a torrent for the episodes to The Pirate Bay.

But the intrusion has so far fallen well short of the chaos inflicted on Sony when the studio was hacked in 2014.

"The reason they got in this scenario is they didn't have the right pre-emption strategy", Falkowitz said.
