A drunken American who gave the stiff-armed Nazi salute several times in Dresden was injured when he was punched by a passer-by.

The tourist was identified only as a 41-year-old American man who was "severely drunk", according to police. A police test showed that he was heavily intoxicated with a blood alcohol level of 0.276 percent.

His attacker fled the scene and is being sought for causing bodily harm.

The police have launched a procedure for the use of "symbols of unconstitutional organizations" by the tourist. His name is not being released for privacy reasons, police said.

Indian Tourists Among 600 Stranded Due To Nepal Floods
Authorities say the death toll could go up as more people are missing in floods in the eastern Tarai. Severe monsoon flooding and landslides killed almost two dozen people in eastern Nepal on Saturday.

The Dresden incident occurred just a week after two Chinese tourists were detained for giving Nazi salutes outside Berlin's Reichstag, once home to the Imperial Diet. They were released after each posted bail of 500 euros, or almost $600.

The American citizen - whose identity is now being withheld - is being investigated for violating German law that strictly forbids the use of Nazi symbols. A conviction can carry a prison sentence of up to three years, although courts often impose fines instead.

It is illegal to display symbols of Nazism in Germany.
