According to a public statement released on the official website of the Cyberspace Administration of China on August 11, the government organ has filed an official case against these three platforms and is conducting a formal investigation. The Administration said that it expects the companies to clean up the content on their platforms.

Baidu said it had deep regret over content that fell into those categories and would cooperate actively with the departments of the government to fix the issues as well as increase its auditing. It didn't specify what actions may be taken, and Tencent, Baidu and Weibo had no immediate comment on the notice.

China's regulations for suppressing the spread of censored contents will further assist officials to gain complete dominance over communication; hence, the researchers and new visitors to China are likely to face troublesome consequences without proper internet connection.

Last month, Beijing scrubbed memorial photos of Dr Liu Xiaobo from WeChat and Weibo, after the long-imprisoned Nobel Peace laureate's death from cancer.

The first is a white male, aged over 50, of slim build with pale skin, heavy dimmed glasses and white coloured pants . One aged 25 to 30, with tanned skin, was wearing a grey or blue t-shirt, grey gym shorts and heavy-duty flip flops.

The latest probe centres on three of the country's largest repositories of online musings, all with hundreds of millions of users, Tencent's WeChat messaging service, Weibo's Twitterlike blog and Baidu's "Tieba" forums. Liu was an author of Charter 08, a document calling for democracy in China, and Beijing aimed to smother that intellectual legacy.

Prior to the meeting, Weibo was ordered to partially close its video site over violations, wiping out a combined US$1.3 billion (S$1.8 billion) worth of stock between Weibo and parent company Sina Corp.

BEIJING-China's internet regulator is investigating whether some of the country's biggest social-media platforms violated a new cybersecurity law by hosting content including "violent terrorism, fake rumors and pornography".

Regulators over the past few months have taken unprecedented and severe moves to eliminate content and media on a number of different platforms.
