Emma Coburn of the United States, gold, celebrates after the Women's 3000 metres Steeplechase final during day eight of the 16th IAAF World Athletics Championships London 2017 at The London Stadium on August 11, 2017 in London, United Kingdom.

The run was historic.

Coburn finished third in the Olympic final past year though was only an outsider for the title here, with the likes of Jepkemoi and Jebet considered the favorites, though in a dramatic race the American stayed calm to set a new Championship record with a time of 9:02.58.

Coburn lowered her American record and set a new world championship record with her 9:02.58 victory. Just her compatriots Celliphine Chespol and Hyvin Kiyeng Jepkemoi were faster this year.

Surprisingly, on the final lap it was world record holder Jebet who began to fall away first, and with Chepkoech falling behind at the water jump, it was here when Coburn made the decisive move. But her strong recovery allowed her to just make the final on time.

It was here where Coburn seized her opportunity as she kicked on, completing the water jump easily before she found another boost in speed to clinch a superb triumph.

The first is a white male, aged over 50, of slim build with pale skin, heavy dimmed glasses and white coloured pants . One aged 25 to 30, with tanned skin, was wearing a grey or blue t-shirt, grey gym shorts and heavy-duty flip flops.

"Oh my goodness, what a race to be part of", she said.

"It is pretty incredible to get a Championship record". We just wanted to show the American women are stepping up over the discipline as well.

"I tried to stay at the front but they had too much over the last water jump".

Frerichs is certainly one of the biggest surprises of the world championships. She hugged with Coburn after crossing the line to celetrate the first ever one-two finish in steeplechase for the United States at World Championships.

Miller-Uibo was 0.07 seconds adrift in third place, her bronze medal - her first over this distance at either the Olympic Games or World Championships - offering some consolation from a hard Championships. "I knew I had to have a flawless day to get on the podium..."

Kenya are second with on three golds, a silver and a bronze.
