The fallout over that Google diversity memo rages on

Sundar Pichai Google CEO Sundar Pichai Google CEO

Pichai said in an email to staff that several Google employees became fearful for their safety and grew concerned about being outed for speaking up at the town hall.

In the 10-page, 3,300-word manifesto, the 28-year-old argues that a gender gap at Google exists not exclusively because of sexism, but in part because of "biological" differences between men and women. In an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal, "Why I was sacked by Google", Damore said that Google is "a particularly intense echo chamber because it is in the middle of Silicon Valley and is so life-encompassing as a place to work". But his termination hardly served as a resolution. Someone with access to an employee-only version of Google Plus made screenshots of messages written by Google employees pledging to create blacklists of colleagues not supportive of the company's diversity measures. She also said that she was regularly faced with sexist remarks, such as comments about her looks.

"In assessing Google's action in firing Damore, it isn't necessary to decide which side is right, but only whether Damore's view is one that a Google employee should be permitted to express", Singer wrote in a column for Daily News. This past January, in its last month of office, the Obama DoL followed up with a lawsuit alleging that Google had not been forthcoming enough in providing employee information in response to the review, and asking a court to order it to comply.

"Googlers are writing in, concerned about their safety and anxious they may be "outed" publicly for asking a question in the Town Hall", Pichai wrote.

The controversy has fueled a national debate, at a time when Silicon Valley has had to grapple with tough questions about the diversity of its ranks.

Liu was an author of Charter 08, a document calling for democracy in China, and Beijing aimed to smother that intellectual legacy. It didn't specify what actions may be taken, and Tencent, Baidu and Weibo had no immediate comment on the notice.

"I want you to know there's a place for you in this industry", Pichai said to the young women in the audience.

"TL;DR Sorry for the late notice but we are going to cancel today's Town Hall". This is hurting minority Googlers because it creates the perception that they are less qualified. Having these views challenged can be painful, so we tend to avoid people with differing values and to associate with those who share our values.

"Over the past two days, I have had the chance to meet with so many people here, and I have read each of your emails carefully". That is something we can change and encouraging young girls to study STEM subjects would bring more females into those disciplines. And some are anxious that you can not speak out at work freely. Although the ads use the Apple logo and its famous slogan "Think Different", they are not Apple ads and Apple was not involved.

"In the meantime, let's not forget what unites us as a company - our desire to build great products for everyone that make a big difference in their lives". Non-union or "at will" employees, such as most tech workers, can be fired in the United States for a wide array of reasons that have nothing to do with performance.
