The Oakland Raiders played their first preseason game of the year on Saturday evening, but the outcome and players' performances won't be the dominant storyline that emerges.

Del Rio prefers his players stand at attention for the national anthem, a view he expressed after former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick kneeled during the song protesting racial inequality and police brutality against minorities.

Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch remained seated during the national anthem prior to the team's 20-10 loss to the Cardinals in their preseason opener. In Lynch's case, according to the AP, he left the locker room before the reporters arrived.

"He said, 'This is something I have done for 11 years". Lynch voiced support for Kaepernick while speaking to talk-show host Conan O'Brien a year ago, and Saturday's sit-down came right after racially-motivated protests and violence recently took place in Charlottesville, Va. "It's not a form of anything other than me being myself'".

"With what's going on, I'd rather see him take a knee than stand up, put his hands up and get murdered", Lynch told ESPN previous year.

Lynch made news, however, by sitting on a cooler on the sideline during the singing of the national anthem. "You do your thing".

"Obviously, we all support Marshawn because he's part of our team, but I think that is more of a personal thing", Manuel said.

Two of the Raiders' top defensive players, All-Pro defensive end Khalil Mack and linebacker Bruce Irvin, joined Carr and Lynch as spectators.

Del Rio added that the protest was a "non-issue" for him as a coach.
