Kandy Test: India 329 for 6 on Day 1

Sri Lanka's Test squad for third Test against India India vs SL, 3rd Test: KL Rahul & Shikhar Dhawan lead charge
Lucia Summers | 13 August, 2017, 15:09

A 188-run opening stand between Shikhar Dhawan, who smashed 119, and Lokesh Rahul, who made 85, had paved the way for India's commanding total after the visitors chose to bat first. Although the likes of Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane had an off day, India at stumps were 329/6. But then he played away from a Sandakan delivery and the ball turned to take a healthy edge and fly to first slip as a regulation catch.

Wriddhiman Saha (13 not out) and Hardik Pandya (1 no) will resume in Kandy on Sunday.

Kuldeep Yadav (26) batted resolutely though and put on 62 runs with Pandya for the 8th wicket. Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul started off in a belligerent manner, hitting boundaries at will. Before this Test, Rahul had six fifties and that meant he got ahead of the likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Sanjay Manjrekar and Navjot Sidhu, who all scored five straight half-centuries in their respective Test careers.

Kohli said with clarity on the rules, the players would be less prone to violating them. But a mistimed sweep brought his innings to an end as Chandimal dived full length to his left at square leg to latch on to the ball in mid air.

The Indian cricketer bolted an unbelievable 108 runs with the help of 15 boundaries - eight 4s and seven 6s- before he was taken down as Dilruwan Perera catches his shot on Sandakan's ball. While Kohli stressed on the need for continuity and consistency in team selection, even someone like Ishant Sharma is not completely out of contention, especially with the limited-overs series and more to follow soon after. "They gave me a new name and I was just celebrating that, that's it", said Dhawan, while stopping short of actually shedding light on the matter.

"I always try to remain happy and that reflects in my game".

"A chinaman bowler is always something which is an x-factor in a team and I would say his confidence is his USP". I have matured over the years.

The ever dependable Pujara's discomfort at the crease came to an end as he was caught at first slip off Sandakan in the 51st over. Those are batting now are capable of scoring big runs and it's a wicket where it is not spinning but it doesn't have bounce.

By this time, Malinda Pushpakumara had bowled four overs in the morning, and his figures read 22-2-56-3.

Leading the spin attack in Rangana Herath's absence, off-spinner Dilruwan Perera failed to impress as Dhawan danced down the track in only his second over to loft him over mid-off and then fetched another boundary with a pull.
