Hundreds of people have been displaced by the flood.

Severe monsoon flooding and landslides killed almost two dozen people in eastern Nepal on Saturday.

The Nepal Red Cross Society is also working with local authorities to warn thousands of people of further threats from rising rivers and further landslides.

As many as 8,300 security personnel from Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and Nepal Army have already been mobilised in the rescue operation across the country.

Authorities say the death toll could go up as more people are missing in floods in the eastern Tarai.

Seventeen bodies have been recovered from the accident site in the Himalayan state, said Sandeep Kadam, a senior official at the scene.

The meteorological department forecast that central and western plains were likely to receive heavy rainfall from this evening.

The floods and landslides have claimed at least 53 lives over the past three days, in the Terai region bordering India and other areas of Nepal, according to the Government of Nepal.

"It has left extensive damage", said Dipak Kafle, a spokesman for Nepal's Home Ministry.

A hotel owner in Sauraha, 155km (96 miles) south-west of the capital, Kathmandu, said the elephants had been used to take the tourists to the nearest open road and airport.

Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba ordered district administrations to intensify rescue operations.

Hundreds of houses have been submerged in Morang.
