Champions Chelsea reduced to nine and beaten 3-2 by Burnley

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte blamed a loss of composure after the Premier League champions were shocked 2-3 by Burnley in their opening game of the new season on Saturday.

Chelsea, despite their numerical advantage, anxious Burnley for the remainder of the game.

Morata's first goal in the blue of Chelsea came on 68 minutes when he stooped to head home a brilliant cross from Willian and give the Stamford Bridge faithful a bit of hope.

Burnley however changed their tactics after Cahill was sent off and it paid off in the 24th minutes when Sam Vokes netted the first goal after a wonderful cross from Mathew Lowton.

It began to unravel before the quarter-hour mark when Cahill was shown a straight red card for his lunge at Defour before Fabregas was booked for sarcastically clapping Pawson.

Wayne Rooney marked his Premier League return to Goodison Park with a dream winning goal as Everton got their 2017/18 season off to the ideal start.

Alvaro Morata nearly inspired a comeback as a second-half substitute, scoring before setting up a late strike for David Luiz, a goal that came after Cesc Fabregas' removal for a second yellow had seen Chelsea reduced to nine men. Ignoring the obvious opportunity to launch a cross into the Chelsea area, the visitors played a free-kick short.

Chelsea had their first real chance at goal 11 minutes in when Cesar Azpilicueta's low cross was deflected and almost sat up for Willian to fire home in the centre of the goal. While that was speculative, Burnley were being clinical.

Striker Sam Vokes scored two of them by converting crosses, sandwiching a stunning volley by left back Stephen Ward.

It was a nervous time for Burnley fans as Chelsea continued to press.

The Blues weren't too impressive during pre-season and rounded off preparations for the new campaign with defeat against Arsenal on penalties in the Community Shield last weekend at Wembley. The Brazilian curled an exquisite 69th-minute cross into space behind the Burnley defence and substitute Morata stooped to guide a diving header past Heaton, just nine minutes after coming on. There were calls for offside, but the referee swallowed his whistle and the goal stood.

Cesc Fabregas was then sent off for a late challenge on Jack Cork but David Luiz added 1 more goal for Chelsea.

"In recent games we have finished with nine or 10 men".

Fabregas then saw red for a second booking - but David Luiz pulled another one back to set up a frenetic finish in which Burnley's Robbie Brady hit the post and Morata failed to touch home late on.
