A nurse took the newborn to his mother for breast-feeding and put the child next to her in her hospital bed at Adventist Medical Center in Portland, Ore.

According to the file suit, the baby had been taken to a nursery late on August 5, 2012, so the mother could rest before being discharged, and she was given the cocktail of narcotic painkillers and sleep aids.

The baby, who never regained consciousness, died seven days later when his parents turned off his life support after he placed in intensive care. The lawsuit also claims the Portland hospital nurse brought the newborn in to breastfeed at 3 a.m. and put him into the bed with Thompson before exiting and leaving them unattended. The suit states that about an hour later, Monica Thompson was "still drowsy and groggy" when she realized her son wasn't moving. She tried to wake him up while calling for a nurse for help.

When no one came to her aid, she carried the limp baby out into the hospital corridor "frantically" crying for help. It also asks for damages to cover medical and counseling expenses for depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, which Thompson says were caused by the death of her son.

The lawsuit, seeking $8.6 million, says the hospital was negligent for medicating Thompson, putting Jacob in bed with her without supervision, and not having clear policies on the dangers that the combination could create.

Monica Thompson, 42, gave birth to a healthy baby boy via C-section on August 2 in 2012.

The accident occurred at around 11:34 p.m. when a coach hit the wall of the Qinling tunnel of the Xi'an-Hanzhong Expressway. Deadly road accidents are common in China, where traffic regulations are often flouted or go unenforced by police.

The civil suit contends Monica Thompson's newborn son, Jacob, died as a result of negligence by Physicians Regional in Collier County and an unidentified nurse there.

After six days, doctors told the parents the baby's comatose state was irreversible.

Kristi Spurgeon Johnson, a spokeswoman for Portland Adventist Medical Center, said Wednesday she couldn't comment on the lawsuit until the hospital has had a chance to review it.

"Jacob was a true miracle baby". "Adventist Medical Center is committed to providing quality, compassionate care to all of our patients".

Adding, 'My firstborn and only son. She said they were unable to provide any additional information at the time. "I am sharing our story in the hopes that no mother or family will ever have to suffer through a preventable tragedy such as this", the Thompson family said in a statement. They also recommend placing babies to sleep on a firm sleep surface, keeping soft objects, loose bedding, or any objects that could increase the risk of entrapment, suffocation, or strangulation out of the crib.

The lawsuit paints a disturbing picture of the mother trying to rouse her baby.
