According to the court document, on Thursday, police went to Noble's home as they worked to find evidence in the case against McCarthy.
Michael, 37, had been on the force less than a year and was the first police officer killed in the line of duty in Clinton, a town of about 9,000 people about 75 miles (120 kilometers) southeast of Kansas City.
Ian McCarthy is charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in Michael's death. Noble said he bought the gun for McCarthy because he was from out-of-state.
The affidavit did not say why officers wanted to talk to him, but they told him they wanted to see guns he owned.
"Noble acted like he was visibly upset and faked crying", according to the affidavit. Noble provided police a written statement about selling the firearm to McCarthy. He eventually changed his story and acknowledged that McCarthy asked him to buy the rifle for him.

Noble told police he threw the rifle into a body of water, and on Thursday led investigators to the site, according to an affidavit filed in Henry County Circuit Court. He took officers to the creek Thursday, where they recovered a rifle that "meets the description and appears.to be the weapon used in the murder", according to the probable cause statement. Noble then "stared" at the officer for about a minute, "blankly", before the officer asked again and he said that he knew where the weapon was.
Police asked Noble if he knew where the gun now was.
Noble then said that on August 7, he came home around 2 a.m. from Lee's Summit, walked into his house, and saw the rifle leaning against the inside doorway.
Noble is now being held in the Henry County Jail on a $25,000 cash bond.
