Instead, Ramil Guliyev, of Turkey, earned the upset of the world championships Thursday when he matched Van Niekerk stride for stride and won the 200-meter title by lunging at the line just ahead of the favored South African.

Guliyev, who is a member of Turkey's Fenerbah├že sports club, finished the race in 20.09 seconds, ahead of South African Olympic champion Wayde van Niekerk, who took silver in 20.11 seconds.

This was Guliyev's first title in the world's major events, as his previous best result in the event was a sliver medal at the 2016 European Championships.

Having got out of the blocks sharply, Makwala came out of the bend with a realistic chance of a medal but faded to finish sixth.

"I've shown enough dominance, hard work and performances to start building my own image and brand".

Jereem Richards of Trinidad and Tobago claimed bronze in a photo finish from the South African.

There were a few boos from the packed-out London Stadium crowd as Guliyev streaked through the line ahead of Van Niekerk, thousands immediately upping and leaving rather than savouring the winning moment which ruined the South African's bid to match Michael Johnson, the United States track legend who won the double at the 1995 Gothenburg worlds and went on to repeat the feat a year later in the Atlanta Olympics.

Van Niekerk, who has set his sights on the 100m/200m double at next year's Commonwealth Games, described his world championships campaign as a "rollercoaster".

"I delivered my best race at the right time".

"This is not a shock", said the champion. I have proven over and over I deserve what I have achieved. I think it's great for my career and another moment to be grateful for. I don't think I will ever face this again.

Makwala's plight has become the story of the world championships after he was banned from running in the 400m final because of red-tape and an IAAF ban over a virus outbreak. Claye, the runner-up behind Taylor at the last two Olympics, was five centimeters behind for silver.

Lorraine Ugen could end that week-long drought in the long jump on Friday while Dina Asher-Smith is in contention in the 200m final, after recovering from a broken foot she suffered in February.

Guliyev held his hands over his mouth in sheer disbelief after the slow race - the slowest final since 2003.

"Will makes it tough every single time", said 27-year-old Taylor who added he will move up to the 400m only when he breaks the world record and has a permanent reminder of the 18.30m he needs to do so.on his wrist.

"I felt good out there apart from that last lap", said Muir.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson remains in the hunt for a high jump medal to make up for the disappointment of missing out in the heptathlon after both she and Morgan Lake made it through their qualifying pools with clearances at 1.92m.
