A 100-Year-Old Fruitcake Was Found 'Perfectly Preserved' in Antarctica

Curators from the New Zealand-based Antarctic Heritage Trust - responsible for caring for the bases of early Antarctic explorers - said the cake was still wrapped in paper showing the British maker's label.

Fruit cake was a popular treat in Britain at the time that Scott and his team were exploring the region, and he even documented that he had packed this particular brand with him.

Members of the Antarctic Heritage Trust have discovered a 106-year-old fruitcake in a remote Antarctic hut. The Heritage Trust believes the cake dates from his endeavor, known as the Terra Nova Expedition after the supply ship.

Although the cake looked and smelled edible, it will remain a mystery as to what the century-old sweet tastes like as it is unethical for conservators to taste-test their finds, Meek told Newshub.

"It's an ideal high-energy food for Antarctic conditions, and is still a favourite item on modern trips to the Ice", says Lizzie Meek, the artifacts programme manager at the Trust, in a statement.

Conservation treatment involved rust removal, chemical stabilisation and coating of the tin remnants.

Conservators have been working on Antarctic artefacts from Cape Adare since May past year and have accrued nearly 1,500. The tin's label underwent deacidification, and the paper had some minor repairs made to tears.

The discovery was made during an effort to preserve Antarctica's first buildings, constructed by Norwegians in 1899 and used by Scott on his later expedition.

The Trust is now planning to begin the conservation work on the buildings at Cape Adare. This will happen once the huts themselves have been restored.
