Pfau breathed her last at a hospital affiliated with her Marie Adelaide Leprosy Centre, said Salwa Zainab, a spokeswoman for the charity. "The people of Pakistan salute her unforgettable services, and her legacy will continue to flourish", he added.

The funeral was scheduled for August 19 in Karachi, said Shariq Zaman, a spokesman for Pfau's charity.

She was born in Germany, came to Pakistan in the 1960s and dedicated her life to caring for patients suffering from leprosy.

It was after the horrors of World War II in her native Germany that Pfau chose to dedicate her life to serving humanity, becoming a doctor and joining the Daughters of the Heart of Mary order, founded during the French Revolution. Inferable from her endeavors, in 1996, Pakistan was viewed as one of the principal nations to have controlled leprosy infection.

Now her charity also runs projects in Afghanistan to train health workers.

Smoking Marijuana Triples Risk Of High Blood Pressure Death, Study Says
The study observed 1,200 participants over 20 years, finding that subjects who reported using marijuana were more at risk. In 2005, participants were asked if they ever used marijuana, and if they had, how old they were when they started.

"Dr Pfau's services to end leprosy in Pakistan can not be forgotten". She felt unfulfilled, however, so she joined a Roman Catholic order, the Society of Daughters of the Heart of Mary.

Many Pakistanis said they would like to see their government give Pfau a state funeral because of her services to the country. However, a visa problem kept Pfau in Pakistan, where she went on to live for 57 years.

She was granted Pakistani nationality in 1988, and in 1989 she was presented with the Hilal-i-Pakistan, the country's highest civilian honour. After escaping Second World War and seeing her younger brother die, she first moved to West Germany and studied medicine at Mainz.

In 1979, she was granted the Hilal-i-Imtiaz, the second most noteworthy non military personnel honor of the nation. And she ultimately came to enjoy a celebrity in Pakistan on par with another nun known the world over for her work with the sick and the poor: Mother Teresa.

Saddened to learn of Dr Ruth Pfau's passing.
