A report in the New York Times introduced the world to the term, which was reportedly first used to describe the beef product in an email written by a U.S. Department of Agriculture scientist.

A legal settlement between ABC and a South Dakota meat producer in a defamation lawsuit over the network's reports on a beef product that critics dubbed "pink slime" exceeded $177 million, an attorney for the producer said Wednesday.

Regardless, $177 million is "historically large" - likely the most ever paid in a media defamation lawsuit. There is no denying that's a lot, but the "at least" is because, as CNN Money explains, it's probably not the full amount to which BPI is entitled.

BPI attorney Dan Webb told CNN based on their research this award was the "largest" media defamation settlement in US history. Food Safety News reported that it appeared the $177 million was Disney's payment on top of the amount its insurance covered.

BPI argued that ABC's coverage misled consumers into believing the product is unsafe, is not beef and isn't nutritious. ABC News and reporter Jim Avila. Avila and his colleagues often called the meat "pink slime", saying that term 52 times on air in just two weeks. Revenues for the company dropped by 80%.

Jack Cichy to miss Badgers season
He's more than capable to take over as the starter and don't be surprised to see the defense not miss a step in Cichy's absence. Junior Ryan Connelly filled in last season after Cichy went down and finished with 59 tackles in 14 games.

The firm sued ABC for $1.9 billion in South Dakota, which can award triple damages for disparagement of a food's safety.

The trial started in June in Elk Point, S.D., a town of about 2,000 people located just 20 miles north of BPI's headquarters, a long way from ABC News headquarters in NY. However, five years later, ABC News continues to stand by the original report, as can be seen in their public statement made at the conclusion of the trial.

The report doesn't list the lawsuit settlement as being linked to the case with BPI, but the litigation costs associated with the lawsuit are the only ones mentioned in the report.

Becker also said, the settlement allowed BPI to move on and "rebuild the business that was taken away from them".

"This is a good product - 100 percent beef, 100 percent safe", he added.
