Consumer Reports pulls recommendation for Microsoft Surface laptops

Consumer Reports stops recommending Microsoft's 'unreliable' Surface lineup This is going in the bin

Others said they had problems starting them up. While the Surface series hasn't been as strong of a performer for Microsoft lately as it has in the past, the series has still been a major player in defining the hybrid tablet PC market among consumers. Based on the survey data, Consumer Reports predicts that 25 percent of Microsoft tablets and laptops will present problems within two years of ownership.

This week, however, the magazine changed its mind, pulling its recommendation for the Microsoft Surface Laptop (128 GB and 256 GB versions) and the Microsoft Surface Book (128 GB and 512 GB versions). Microsoft's hardware was found to be significantly more problematic than other manufacturers', although the group points out that devices such as the Surface Pro fare well in terms of performance. Nonetheless, while it has great things to say - like much of the industry, ourselves included - about the Surface range in terms of performance, it argues it can't recommend the current models.

Several Microsoft products have performed well in CR labs, including the new Microsoft Surface Pro, which earned Very Good or Excellent scores in multiple CR tests.

In a statement, Microsoft denied that the outlet's findings reflected real-world usage among Surface users.

Not that numerous 90,000 surveyed were Surface owners, it would seem.

Investors pull £10bn from Standard Life's Gars fund
The company's board has proposed an interim dividend of 7.00 pence per share, an increase of 8.2 percent from the year-ago period. However, he added: "The evidence I have seen to date says that Gars flows are starting to stabilise as performance has improved".

But as Consumer Reports notes, the reliability of Apple's laptop and tablet products are consistently the most highly rated by its readers.

Microsoft's estimated breakage rate for its laptops and tablets was higher than most other brands'.

But "it's not great" news since reliability "is one of the key elements" of systems, he added.

Also, we all know that the Surface line has earned its licks for all of the above listed issues - not that we personally have experienced many during our time reviewing Surface products and since.

Microsoft disputed the study, saying the company's return and support rates differ significantly from the Consumer Reports study. Said subscribers - from a total of 90,741 surveyed between 2014 and early this year - have reported issues during device startup as well as freezing and random shutdown problems.
