HealthWatch: Colon Cancer Deaths Increasing; Women Have Higher Brain Activity

Whites demonstrate 'concerning' increase in colon cancer mortality Colon cancer deaths on the rise

The relative five-year survival rate is calculated by dividing the percentage of people diagnosed with cancer who are still alive after five years by the percentage of other ordinary Japanese who are still alive then, so as to exclude deaths from illnesses other than cancer and accidents, and provide a more accurate picture of the effectiveness of treatment.

"Some of it may be due to the fact that there have been changes in young people, in the millennial generation, in terms of a more sedentary lifestyle, dietary changes, obesity may play a role, but that is not really clear", Dr. Andrea Cercek said.

In France, colorectal cancer is the third rank of the most frequent cancers (the second in women and third in men), according to the INCa.

"It's shifting the burden of colorectal cancer to young families and people in their most productive years of life", Rebecca Siegel with the American Cancer Society said. African Americans on the other hand, actually saw a slight decline in those death rates over the same period.

The increase was limited to whites, among whom mortality rates increased by 1.4 percent per year, from 3.6 in 2004 to 4.1 in 2014.

Colorectal cancer rates have been increasing in recent years for Americans below the age of 55, and scientists are unsure why. After 2004, death rates began to increase slightly each year, reaching 4.3 per 100,000 in 2014. "This suggests that the obesity epidemic is probably not wholly responsible for the increase in disease".

Researchers said the increase colorectal cancer deaths in people in their 50s was particularly unexpected since screening - which can both prevent colon cancer and detect it early - has been recommended starting at age 50 for decades.

In Germany, Schaefer backed Tillerson's call to resume talks with Pyongyang if it halts ballistic-missile tests. For Kim, it's all about the United States - and only the United States.

Limitations of the study included its ecologic nature and inaccuracies in about 5% of all death certificates listing colorectal cancer as the underlying cause of death.

These findings are consistent with an increase in the number of whites getting diagnosed with colorectal cancer, but not blacks.

Gastroenterologist and CBS News Senior Medical Editor, Dr. John Lapook said that while the study also found that colon cancer death rates for non-white patients have not gone up, their overall rate is still higher. Conversely, rates declined in black individuals in every age group.

In the meantime, she emphasizes that while the overall risk of colorectal cancer in young and middle aged adults is still very small, there are preventive steps doctors and patients can take to protect themselves.

Know the symptoms. Persistent bleeding from the rectum or in the stool, cramping and change in bowel habits are the most common symptoms associated with colorectal cancer.

"I've never even considered colon cancer as a thing, I thought old men get that", Biskin-Sitko said.
