Now a second recall has been initiated, as the Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continue investigating the outbreak, announcing that more than one hundred people have fallen ill.

As a result, the FDA is working to identify other brands of papayas that may have originated from Carica de Campeche and facilitate recalls.

Illnesses have been reported in 16 states, including Oklahoma.

More details on dates of distribution of affected papayas, brand names and numbers can be found on the FDA's website.

Agroson's LLC was notified by the FDA on August 2, 2017, that several brands of Maradol Papaya from that farm, Carica de Campeche, had tested positive for Salmonella bacteria.

"However, the product may have been further distributed outside the state of IL", according to the recall notice on the Food and Drug Administration's website. No other papayas distributed by Argroson's LLC are recalled.

Grande Produce of San Juan, TX, and Agroson's Produce of New York City already recalled whole, fresh maradol papayas from the Carica de Campeche farm in Southern Mexico.

US health officials more than 100 people - including one in MI - have contracted salmonella by eating papayas from a farm in southern Mexico.

No illness have been reported to date.

The CDC urges people to avoid eating yellow Maradol papayas, and asked restaurants and retailers not to serve/sell.

According to the CDC, the expansion came after samples from papayas sold in Maryland returned outbreak strains of Salmonella Kiambu and Salmonella Thompson.

It is also important for people who have had the salmonella papayas in their home to clean and disinfect any surfaces or utensils that the papaya could have been in contact with, as salmonella can spread easily. The papayas were available for sale until July 31 2017.

The Campeche farm has been added to an import alert which allows FDA field personnel to stop fresh produce from entering the USA from the farm until it's proven to have resolved issues that caused the bacterial contamination.

The outbreak, first reported two weeks ago, was traced to the Carica de Campeche farm in Campeche, which sits between the Gulf and Guatemala.

Editor's note: Because of the popularity of papayas in Mexican and Hispanic cuisine, public health officials say people in those groups are at particular risk during the current outbreak.
