Don't say 'climate change', Trump administration tells its Department of Agriculture: Guardian

Report The USDA won’t let its staff use the phrase “climate change” in any of its work Environmental Protection Agency administrator Scott Pruitt attends

An email obtained by CNN advised Natural Resources Conservation Service employees to avoid the term "Climate Change" and to instead use "Weather Extremes".

"It has become clear one of the previous administration's priority is not consistent with that of the incoming administration".

An email from Bianca Moebius-Clune, director of soil health, revealed that "climate change" is in the "avoid" category, the Guardian reports.

Specifically, Moebius-Clune says to "avoid" using the term "climate change" and to instead say "weather extremes". Instead of "Climate Change Adaptation", the recommended terms include "Resilience to Weather Extremes".

She added that a colleague from USDA's public affairs unit gave advice to "tamp down on discretionary messaging right now".

Alarmed by the White House politics toward climate change, US scientists drafted an alarming report which concludes that temperatures have risen rapidly since 1980, as reported in The New York Times.

The Center for Biological Diversity is now suing several government agencies, including the EPA and State Department, to force them to release information on the "censoring" of climate change verbiage. "At USDA, we rely on sound science and we remain firmly committed to digging ever deeper into research to develop better methods of agricultural production in that changing climate".

Clouds could always spoil the view, so eclipse watchers need to be ready to split for somewhere with clear skies, if necessary. The eclipse has what's called a "path of totality" where the moon casts its shadow onto the Earth, causing the sky to go dark.

In May, CBD launched a lawsuit against the administration "to uncover public records showing that federal employees have been censored from using words or phrases related to climate change in formal agency communications".

The Trump aide has also said climate change is "simply a mechanism for transferring wealth from one group of people to another".

"We won't change the modeling", one NRCS official wrote.

In response to these changes, employees have said "we would prefer to keep the language as is" as they want to maintain the "scientific integrity of the work".

The emails, dated from earlier in 2017, were sent internally to staffers at the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), a small agency at the USDA that's tasked with maintaining the health of U.S. soil, air, and water for farmers, ranchers, and forest landowners. "Please visit with your staff and make them aware of this shift in perspective within the executive branch". The Environmental Protection Agency removed the climate change page from its website in April, and the White House also deleted its page about the U.S.'s work on climate change.

The USDA has not, however, scrubbed all mentions of "climate change" from its web presence. A USDA plan to address the "far-reaching" impacts of climate change is still online.

Trump's nomination to be the USDA's chief scientist is Sam Clovis, who is not a scientist and is climate-change denier.
