Professor Michio Hirano of Columbia University Medical Center will meet the experts at Great Ormond Street who have been treating ten-month-old Charlie.
Hirano, a researcher from Columbia University who specializes in mitochondrial diseases, plans to travel to the United Kingdom next week to examine him.
"It may be unconventional but this case is full of unconventional aspects", the judge said. The 11-month-old's case took a turn for the better in court when the judge, Mr. Justice Francis, asked the American doctor testifying via video if he'd be willing to examine Charlie. He's now on a ventilator from which Great Ormond Street Hospital officials want to remove him against his parents' wishes.
His parents Connie Yates and Chris Gard want their son to be given the chance for treatment which they believe could help his condition.
"Two global hospitals and their researchers have communicated to us as late as the last 24 hours that they have fresh evidence about their proposed experimental treatment", a hospital spokesman said, according to the BBC. It's their prerogative. That the United Kingdom hospital or the government would not allow them to make the decisions about Charlie's life and medical care is unfathomable.
Charlie suffers from mitochondrial depletion syndrome, a rare genetic disease that has left him brain-damaged and unable to breathe unaided.
The doctor told the court Thursday that he thought the therapy "worth trying", and estimated there was at least a 10 percent chance of meaningful success.
The hospital has said that "a world where only parents speak and decide for children and where children have no separate identity or rights and no court to hear and protect them is far from the world in which (Great Ormond Street Hospital) treats its child patients".

Great Ormond Street Hospital says experimental treatment in America won't help and may cause the child to suffer. The couple yelled and walked out, but returned after a short break Thursday.
Now, new reports indicate Francis wants an independent third-party to measure Charlie's head to determine if there has been any brain development. Charlie needs to be able to be transferred safely, "legal hurdles" must be cleared, and the FDA must give "emergency approval" for the experimental treatment.
The emotional case went to the UK High Court this week after the hospital requested a new hearing to consider "new evidence relating to potential treatment for his condition".
Francis said: "If I'm being told the measurements being taken by a world famous hospital are wrong I have to have more evidence than you telling me".
The hospital's specialists have argued that life support for Charlie should be withdrawn.
"He's our own flesh and blood and we don't even have a say in his life whatsoever", Yates said. Chris Gard punched a table, while his wife said: "We said he's not in suffering and in pain".
