Yoram Ha-Levy, Jerusalem police district commander, said that Friday prayers would not be held at the Al-Aqsa mosque.

The Palestinian attackers fled the scene towards the Al-Aqsa mosque compound, and an exchange of fire took place between them and the Israeli police.

The Israeli police said three of its forces have also been wounded, two of them critically.

Mahmoud Abbas condemned the attack on the Temple Mount, the official PA media agency Wafa reported. Sathawi left a wife and a 3-week-old baby, police said.

280 Palestinians have been killed in the same period, majority assailants, according to the Israeli police. The Israeli ambulance service Magen David Adom said two of the Israelis wounded were receiving life-saving treatment.

Abbas denounced the incident but called for Israel to open the holy site which was closed by police over security concerns.

Israeli authorities say most of the Palestinians killed were carrying out knife, gun or car-ramming attacks.

Haaretz quoted the Israeli police stating that the three Palestinians arrived at one of Al-Aqsa gates, and noticed police and military presence, before they opened fire on them and escaped.

The attack was near the Temple Mount, a major holy site.

Muslim worshippers performed prayers in the streets near Jerusalem's walled Old City after police sealed the area in the wake of a Palestinian shooting attack that killed two Israeli policemen.

The last time the Temple Mount complex was closed off to Muslims was a day after the 2014 shooting of Yehudah Glick, now a Knesset member for the Likud.

Police are investigating how the assailants were able to get the weapons past strict security.

Eight Israelis have been killed by Palestinians during the same time period.

"It was made a decision to shutter the Temple Mount today for security reasons".

Jerusalem is still in the grip of a series of Palestinian street attacks that began in 2015, though the violence has slowed.

Meanwhile, the Hamas Spokesman Hazem Qassem said that the Al-Aqsa mosque operation proved that the young Palestinians are tend to sacrifice their life to protect the holy mosque against occupiers' insults.

The incident was one of the triggers of an armed Palestinian uprising, including Palestinian suicide bombings targeting civilians in cafes and buses, that claimed several thousand victims, majority Palestinians, and only began to ebb in 2005.
