Former astronaut Julie Payette will be Canada's next governor general, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's office announced. She will be a representative of the queen of Britain and will mainly have ceremonial functions.

Payette - the second Canadian woman to fly into space after Roberta Bondar - was aboard the space shuttle Discovery in 1999 and Endeavour in 2009.

Canada's next Governor General will be engineer and astronaut Julie Payette.

Payette, 53, would replace outgoing Governor General David Johnston, 76, whose term is set to expire in September after almost seven years in office.

"She plays the piano and has sung with the Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal, the Piacere Vocale in Basel, Switzerland, and the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra in Toronto".

FIR Filed Against AIB Team For Posting Meme On PM Modi
AIB then took an actual photo of the PM, placed it alongside, and used Snapchat's dog filter on it. The tweet posted by AIB was meant for taking a dig at prime minister's frequent foreign visits.

Her biography on the Canadian Space Agency's website says she has a commercial pilot licence, is fluent in French and English, but can also converse in Spanish, Italian, Russian and German, and is an accomplished singer.

And she has military experience, a quality that may help in her role as the military's commander-in-chief: Payette qualified as a military jet captain in 1996 after logging hundreds of hours of flight time on the CT-114 Tutor jets, the same ones flown by the Snowbird team.

Johnston will have an audience with the Queen next week when he travels to the United Kingdom for Canada 150 events, marking the last time he meets with the monarch he represents.

While most Canadians will recognize the title Governor General, not all citizens may know exactly what the prestigious role entails.

It would replace the current governor-general David Johnston from September 2017. "You get to see a lot of awesome details", she said.
