Disrupted and inadequate sleep might be indicating towards Alzheimer's disease, study

Sharp focus on Alzheimer's may help target drugs Poor Sleep Tied to Increased Alzheimer's Risk

According to them, they did not find any link between biological markers for Alzheimer's disease and obstructive sleep apnoea.

While some of these relationships were strong when looking at everyone as a group, not everyone with sleep problems has abnormalities in their spinal fluid.

Soon, Alzheimer's and dementia may be added to this list, too.

"Drugs that could clear away clumps of protein in the brain are a key goal for researchers, but to directly affect these proteins, molecules that make up a drug need to latch on and bind to their surface".

Screening middle-aged adults for levels of amyloid protein in the organ could halt the irreversible damage, a study suggests.

"Until now the high-resolution structures of tau or any other disease-causing filaments from human brain tissue have remained unknown".

She added that lack of sleep or disrupted sleep could lead to amyloid plaque deposits in the brain because the clearance system kicks into action during sleeping.

'Our study looked not only for amyloid but for other biological markers in the spinal fluid as well.

Dr Rosa Sancho, Head of Research, Alzheimer's Research UK, said: "A buildup of tau protein is a feature of a number of different degenerative brain diseases, and this work could help to answer key questions about why it starts to behave unusually and how it leads to such a wide variety of conditions".

Scientists have for the first time revealed the atomic structure of the tau protein filaments that tangle in the brains of Alzheimer's patients and say it should point the way toward developing new treatments for the disease.

How was the study conducted?

.

Researchers recruited 101 people with an average age of 63 years who had normal thinking and memory skills but who were considered at risk of developing Alzheimers.

All participants had known risk factors for Alzheimer's, such as family history or evidence of the APOE gene, which is associated with a greater risk of the disease. They have found that those subjects who actually reported sleep issues were more likely to also show evidence of brain cell damage and inflammation even when other factors like depression and cardiovascular disease were taken into account. While tau filaments are formed within the nerve cells of the brain, beta amyloid proteins are formed outside the nerve cells in the form of filaments.

All participants volunteered to give a sample of spinal fluid to be analyzed for markers of Alzheimer's.

In the meantime, Bendlin said further research is needed to solidify the risks of sleep deprivation in increasing the risks of Alzheimer's disease. Depositing amyloid in brain tissue is the first known preclinical stage of Alzheimer's and happens well before any obvious symptoms of dementia begin.

One in three Americans doesn't get enough sleep, and 45% of the world's population doesn't, either.
