Now, at the Shanghai Mobile World Congress, Qualcomm has taken off the wraps of its latest chipset in the budget Snapdragon 400 series - Snapdragon 450, with some features inspired from its mid-range Snapdragon 625 chipset.

The Snapdragon 450 is the first of the 400-series family to feature the 14nm FinFET process. The current-gen Snapdragon 435 chipset is clocked at 1.4GHz while the next-gen Snapdragon 450 chipset will be clocked at 1.8GHz. The Snapdragon 450 is expected to begin commercial sampling to customers in Q3 2017, and is expected to be available in consumer devices by the end of 2017. The reason for this enhanced efficiency on 450 chipset has been attributed to higher-end components from 600 and 800 series trickling down to the 400-series.

According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 450 boasts 25% more GPU and CPU performance than its predecessor, the Snapdragon 435. Looking beyond CPU and GPU performance, the Snapdragon 450 contains several power management tweaks that Qualcomm claims can help phones run up to four times longer compared to handsets wielding a Snapdragon 435.

It supports one 32-bit LPDDR3 RAM. The vast majority of Android smartphones now have a Qualcomm processor.

Devices powered by the Snapdragon 450 will start shipping in the fourth quarter of this year. Most users, especially those in the growing market often prefer entry level and mid-range smartphones for their affordable price tag. The chip brings upgrades over the Snapdragon 435 SoC in terms of battery life, imaging, and gaming performance as well.

The Snapdragon 450 will also add four hours of battery life and supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0.

Meanwhile the Adreno 506 GPU provides a 25 percent increase in graphics performance. It can support a max of 21-megapixel single camera. As for connectivity, the chipset will support Snapdragon X9 LTE modem, which uses 2x20MHz carrier aggregation in both downlink and uplink for peak speeds of 300 Mbps and 150 Mbps respectively, support for a large number of mobile networks with Snapdragon All Mode, and 802.11ac with MU-MIMO support. The Snapdragon Wear 1200 processor will notably bring LTE categories M1 (eMTC) and NB1 (NB-IoT) connectivity to the wearable platform. Location features include support for GPS, GLONASS, Gallileo and BeiDou constellations, low power geo-fencing, and Qualcomm Technologies' cloud based location services with comprehensive global terrestrial positioning using Wi-Fi and cellular service.
