Qualcomm announces fingerprint readers that work through glass and metal

No clumsily positioned sensors in the back no chin below the screen- just touch the display at a designated spot and the phone is unlocked Qualcomm's New Fingerprint Scanner Works Through Displays With Heartbeat and Blood Flow Detection

Qualcomm says it is working with the Chinese manufacturer and will display modified versions of the Xplay6 sporting Qualcomm Fingerprint Sensors for Display at the Shanghai Mobile World Congress.

The new tech is specifically created to work with OLED displays, like those favored by Samsung, so Apple would have to switch from the IPS LCD display material it now uses - something else that's rumored to be in the pipeline for the iPhone 8.

Qualcomm Fingerprint Sensors can be activated even when a device's screen is turned off.

These new in-display fingerprint sensors will work under metal, glass, and underwater.

Qualcomm's previous generation of fingerprint sensors could read through 0.4mm of glass or metal.

The first phones to feature the glass and metal sensors should arrive in early 2018.

With sensors for display, it has now opened the doors for phones with under-display fingerprint scanners.

"We are excited to announce Qualcomm Fingerprint Sensors because they can be created to support sleeker, cutting-edge form factors, unique mobile authentication experiences, and enhanced security authentication". A device will need to be using a display panel under 1200 μm, meaning traditional LCDs won't work. We thought it would be Samsung with the Galaxy S8 and then they settled on the worst location in the history of phone fingerprint readers.

Qualcomm unveiled its in-screen fingerprint tech and it already has its first customer – vivo.

The Display sensor will work through OLED displays up to 1200μm thick, and it supports ultrasonic wake-and-authenticate. The first devices to use their technology are expected to launch in the first half of 2018.

The company claims its solution, Under Display, is a fingerprint scanner that can be placed under the glass, or even on the phone's metal back. "Snapdragon Wear 1200 takes advantage of the wide coverage provided by emerging LTE narrowband technologies, or LTE IoT, to help usher in a new generation of ultra-low power, highly energy efficient, always connected, and cost-efficient experiences to targeted goal wearable devices such as kid, pet, elderly, and fitness trackers", according to the company.

The Snapdragon 450 looks to be a very capable chipset for mid-range devices, but we'll have to wait just a little while to see it in devices.
