Abadi is on a regional tour that started in Saudi Arabia and will include a stop in Kuwait.

He said Iran stands by Iraq in its fight against the jihadists and considers a "victory over terrorism" as its own. State television footage showed the missiles on truck missile launchers in the daylight before being launched at night.

The missile operation "is just a very small part of the capability of Iran's punitive force against the terrorists and its enemies", the Islamic Students' News Agency quoted Guards spokesman Brigadier General Ramezan Sharif as telling state TV. The extremists have been trying to fortify their positions in the Syrian city in the face of a US -led coalition onslaught on Raqqa, the group's de facto capital.

The coalition's presence in Tanf, on the Damascus-Baghdad highway, was meant to stop Iranian-backed groups from opening an overland route between Iraq and Syria, intelligence sources have said.

An IRGC statement on Sunday said the missiles hit "the command headquarters, meeting centers and logistical sites in which suicide auto bombs were being assembled" with "pinpoint" accuracy and killed a "large number" of terrorists and destroyed their equipment and weapons.

The extremist group's 7 June attack on Tehran left at least 18 people dead and more than 50 injured.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has stressed that the Islamic Republic will respond "more decisively" to any future terrorist attack on Iran's soil, PressTV reported.

May calls for major investigation of cladding
His body, which was recovered by firefighters on the 13th floor, had to be identified by his dental records. Of the 75 buildings where cladding has been tested, all failed fire safety checks.

"The Saudis and Americans are especially receivers of this message", he said.

The missile strikes are also being used to warn "some reactionary countries" of the sub-region, and Saudi Arabia was expressly singled out as one of them, with allegations that "they are trying to bring insecurity into Iran". The location where the sixth missile struck is unknown.

As reporter Anshel Pfeffer observes, this is a "major development" and constitutes the "first operational use of mid-range missiles by Iran since war with Iraq".

The IRGC launched the missiles from western provinces of Kermanshah and Kurdistan, home to Sunni Kurdish populations.

Noting that Iran's policies in relation to the region and global affairs have not changed, Iran's president stressed that if any group tries to attack the country and harm the Islamic Republic they will receive a "decisive answer".

The missiles successfully hit the targets, Sharif said.

A former IRGC leader took to Twitter to reiterate the point that while the missile strike targeted ISIS it also served as a warning to Saudi and the U.S.
