Grenfell Tower fire: Estate residents call for thorough inquiry

Velma Reese | 29 June, 2017, 09:06

Today the Government revealed the total number of towers fitted with unsafe cladding had risen to 95 in 32 local authority areas in England.

Cork County Council said that following the Grenfell Tower blaze in Britain, which killed 79 people earlier this month, it "had come to light" that a similar aluminium composite material had been used on the County Hall building.

Sir Ken Knight, who wrote a report on the 2009 Lakanal House fire, in which six people died, stated: "It is not considered practical or economically viable to make a requirement for the retrospective fitting of fire suppression systems to all current high-rise residential buildings".

As the Government continued to scrutinise fire safety at other high-rise blocks, it emerged the chairman of an expert panel had previously advised against retro-fitting sprinklers in such buildings.

The investigation of the Grenfell Tower fire must leave "no stone unturned", an open letter to Theresa May has warned.

Britain's prime minister on Tuesday ordered an investigation into cladding and insulation on high-rise towers across the country, as authorities struggled to contain the risk from construction materials that leave tall structures vulnerable to catastrophic fires.

"The issue is they supplied material that was used above their own marketing material's suggested limit", said Seaport Global Securities analyst Josh Sullivan.

The so-called combustibility test, carried out by the Building Research Establishment, has been failed by every building examined so far, Communities and Local Government Secretary Sajid Javid said on Monday.

Isaac's family described him as "kind", "energetic" and "generous".

Paulous' body was found on the building's 13th floor and had to be identified through dental records.

Coroner Fiona Wilcox said Monday that 18 of the victims have so far been formally identified.

The latest "major investigation" is expected to fall under a second phase of that inquiry after all cladding samples submitted by local councils failed the testing criteria.

"We are continuing to work with residents and other hotels to secure accommodation for as long as necessary and we continue to help these residents with their relocation needs".

The Government has provided almost £1.25 million in discretionary payments and will be giving an extra £1 million to a local group of charities, trusts and foundations "which have been doing such important work", Mrs May said.
