Federer to face Zverev in his 11th Halle final

Roger Federer Reaches Last Eight in Halle Federer Holds Off Zverev Challenge

Roger Federer earned a place in his 11th career Gerry Weber Open final thanks to a 6-4, 7-6 (5) victory over Karen Khachanov during semifinal action on Saturday.

The top seed suffered a shock loss to veteran German Tommy Haas in his first competitive match on grass this season in Stuttgart, but has built momentum in a tournament that has given him such fond memories over the years.

A break of serve which put the Swiss 5-2 ahead in the second set proved crucial and he clinched victory with his first match point courtesy of a typically sumptuous volley into an open court. It was total domination by Federer, who returned to action a few weeks back after taking a two-month hiatus from the sport.

Novak Djokovic is just fourth in the market as he heads to Eastbourne in search of form, while second-favourite Andy Murray will play two exhibition matches before the action begins in SW19.

"I played unbelievably well. It could be somewhat similar to how I played today".

Federer, however, was a class above even as his opponent attempted to mix up his game by forcing the Swiss to come to the net more often. When Federer won his first Wimbledon crown in 2003, Zverev was a six-year-old boy in Germany.

In doing so, he became the first player to beat both Zverev brothers at the same event, having defeated older sibling Mischa in the round of 16. "I felt good and never let up", Federer, playing in his 140th career final, said afterward.

He also beat Federer in the semi-final of this very tournament just a year ago.

Federer had already won the Australian Open before titles in Indian Wells and Miami in 2017.

This is going to be a fun match between these two talented players, as Zverev is growing up before our eyes and Federer is, well, Federer.

At Queen's yesterday, Spain's Feliciano Lopez saved one match point before completing a week of upsets in West London by converting his third match point to beat fourth seed Maric Cilic in a marathon final 4-6, 7-6, 7-6.
