DNC Rejected Help from Homeland Security After Russia Hacks

Sammy Stanley | 29 June, 2017, 08:56

Wisconsin's chief election official testified Wednesday before the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Johnson said he was not aware of any information beyond what's been reported publicly and what the USA intelligence community has gathered.

"Former Homeland Security Advisor Jeh Johnson is latest top intelligence official to state there was no grand scheme between Trump & Russia", the president wrote on Twitter Thursday morning.

President Trump also tweeted that Johnson's testimony vindicated him of the claims that he or his campaign colluded with the Russian government.

Johnson also addressed the Obama administration's political sensitivity when it came to warning of the Russian meddling, and alluded to problems created at the time by Trump's own statements.

- In a series of tweets Thursday morning, President Trump openly disputed claims that Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 election and called out the Obama administration for not doing anything if interference took place. "Why didn't they stop them?"

But though the government disclosed that 21 states were potentially impacted by the targeting, lawmakers were left frustrated that the public still doesn't have a full picture of what exactly the Russians did during the election and that it's not fully clear what the USA will do to protect itself going forward.

He followed up by calling the assessment that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 election "a big Dem HOAX!" even though it has the backing of the major United States intelligence agencies, politicians on both sides of the aisle, and members of Trump's administration.

Samuel Liles, acting director of the cyber division with the office of intelligence and analysis department at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), speaks during a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing in Washington, D.C., U.S., on Wednesday, June 21, 2017. He appeared to theorize that Democrats concocted the story as an "excuse" for Hillary Clinton losing the 2016 presidential election.

This is being addressed by the company and we do not know how long it would take to resolve the issue", the official said. The current attacks come weeks after the Wannacry ransomware attack, which impacted systems of many companies.

"We have not been told that we were, that there was an attack in Wisconsin", Haas said.

He said he had not made and does not have the tapes about which he seemed to warn Comey last month.

Senators said the Homeland Security Department should reveal which state election systems were targeted by hackers as Jeanette Manfra, the department's undersecretary for cybersecurity, demurred.

Truth is, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other intelligence agencies were trying to stop Russian Federation and had found evidence in August that Kremlin-backed hackers targeted electoral systems in 21 states, officials confirmed Wednesday.

But Mr Johnson did not say that in evidence on Wednesday before the House intelligence committee.

"My view is that we needed to do it, and we needed to do it well before the election to inform American voters of what we saw", Johnson said.

Johnson received several questions from the Committee on the timing of his release of information on the hacks to the public.

Priestap remained silent. "I don't blame you for not answering that question", Heinrich said. South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy asked Johnson at one point in the hearing. "I think, regardless, President Trump has made it clear we have to protect the integrity of our electoral system".
