Conference: US mayors may shape national climate policy

Senate GOP Leaders Unveil Health Care Plan Environmentalists Form Giant Human Message Outside Miami Beach Mayor's Meeting

Addressing the US Conference of Mayors' Summer meeting this afternoon which is taking place in Miami Beach, Florida, Clinton said that mayors' commitment to get things done was the main reason he met with them every year during his two terms as president. "There may be a little bit of a disagreement about how actually to deal with it", said New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu (D), who is becoming the next president of the conference. "Politics has nearly no influence on science, in case you hadn't noticed", Clinton said during the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Miami Beach. A survey shows that a huge majority of the mayors are keen to join hands with private sector players and work with their peers to address climate change issues.

He said that combating climate change and converting to renewable energy makes environmental and economic sense, and that he received a tour from Beach Mayor Philip Levine demonstrating firsthand how the city is affected by rising seas. Mayors are prepared to respond with, not just talk, but thoughtful deliberate action, said Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson of Gary, IN.

Garcetti, a Democrat, said the number of mayors who have vowed to comply with the Paris deal's stipulations rose to 331 on Saturday, up from 323 on Thursday. Levine says Trump's decision to pull out of the Paris agreement won't stop his city's efforts to improve infrastructure and prepare for climate change.

"If the federal government refuses to act or is just paralyzed, the cities themselves, through their mayors, are going to create a new national policy by the accumulation of our individual efforts", he said.

Introduced by the Co-Chairs of Mayors for 100% Clean Energy, the "100% Renewable Energy in American Cities" resolution could pave the way for cities across the country to adopt 100 percent renewable energy targets within their communities. But almost six months after Donald Trump was sworn in, even Cornett says he's still waiting for signs that the president will help the cities.

And I can't thank you enough". "So, essentially, we have each other to thank for these careers". I could not do that if I didn't have the support of my National Basketball Association family".

"Mayors sit at the helm of every major policy issue, and put partisan differences aside to produce results for our cities and towns".

The conference at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach has drawn 258 mayors, according to organizers.

"We have got to do more to accelerate this transition, because it's good economics", he said.

More than 25 United States cities such as San Diego and Salt Lake City have already adopted the clean-energy policy, and six smaller cities including Aspen, Colo., and Burlington, Vt., have reached goals of generating 100 percent of the energy through renewable sources. "We could use more of that in state and national government".
