The Nigeria Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA, on Sunday alerted Nigerians to the emergence of another deadly cyber-attack, "Petya" ransomware.

The rapidly spreading computer worm appeared to be a variant of an existing ransomware family known as Petya which also has borrowed key features from last month's ransomware attack, named "WannaCry".

Concerned over the latest malware attack affecting the country's largest container port JNPT's operations, the government rushed National Cyber Security Advisor Gulshan Rai to the financial capital today, sources said. Petya was first discovered in 2016 - it is ransomware that encrypts MFT (Master File Tree) tables and overwrites the MBR (Master Boot Record), dropping a ransom note and leaving victims unable to boot their computer.

More than 30 members paid into the bitcoin account associated with the Cyber attack.

Update your Microsoft software as a priority as this ransomware uses the same vulnerability, dubbed EternalBlue, as WannaCry ransomware.

"Microsoft antivirus software finds this ransomware and protects against it", TASS cited Davydova as saying. Russia's Rosneft oil company also reported falling victim to hacking, as did Danish shipping giant A P Moller-Maersk and French construction materials company Saint Gobain.

And ABC News says a Cadbury chocolate factory in Hobart has been hit. Production at the Hobart factory on the island state of Tasmania ground to a halt late on Tuesday after computer systems went down. "Companies are just not doing what they are supposed to do to fix the problem".

Britain's WPP, the world's biggest advertising company, said computer systems within several of its agencies had been hit by a suspected cyber attack. The total number of attacks was unknown. "This looks like a sophisticated attack aimed at generating chaos, not money", computer scientist Prof.

Further analysis by Russian-based Kaspersky Labs instead concludes that the guilty ransomware was completely brand new, although it does have some commonality with Petya.

The attack, also known as "GoldenEye", which is similar to the recent "WannaCry" attack, not only encrypts files but also encrypts hard drives, rendering entire computer systems inaccessible. The worldwide police organization Interpol said it was " closely monitoring " the situation and working together with its member countries.

The cryptolocker demands $300 in bitcoins and does not name the encrypting program, which makes finding a solution hard, Group IB spokesman Evgeny Gukov said.
