The senator and his wife are facing an Federal Bureau of Investigation probe into whether he used his influence to help his wife obtain a loan for the expansion of now-defunct Burlington College while she was president.

As you may have heard - the mainstream press has been a bit slow on the uptake - Socialist Bernie Sanders and his wife are subjects of a federal investigation into bank fraud. It closed in 2016 after struggling to make the repayments.

Sen. Sanders has referred to the allegations against his wife as political warfare, noting that they originated from Trump supporter and Vermont Republican Party Vice Chair Brady Toensing, as Sanders' presidential run was gaining momentum.

"This was a story that just, amazingly enough, came out in the middle of my presidential campaign, initiated by Donald Trump's campaign manager in Vermont", Sanders said in an interview, between rallies in Pennsylvania and OH organized to defeat Senate Republicans' health-care bill.

"My wife is about the most honest person I know", Sanders said to anchor Erin Burnett on CNN.

Sanders, an independent, ran for president as a Democrat previous year but was ousted in the primary by Hillary Clinton, who lost to Trump in the general election.

Former Burlington College President Carol Moore in an interview with Vermont Public Radio in May said the college closed a year ago, in part, because of the troubled $10-million loan, which the institution could not afford.

While the then-president reportedly indicated there was $2.6 million in pledged donations, Burlington College only got $676,000 over the next four years. "But what her intent was was to turn Burlington College into a world-class liberal arts college in Burlington for the benefit of the community". He said it only made sense that the Sanderses had hired an attorney, but they had not been contacted by investigators.

Sanders said that he would not talk about it anymore and will "let it play out".

Politico on Thursday reported Jane Sanders had lawyered up with Washington attorney Larry Robbins. "It would be improper at this point for me to add any more to that". Since Bernie is the boogeyman for a whole lot of people, one has to agree. Toensing stated that the investigation into the real estate deal began while President Obama was still in office and was not fueled by the Trump Administration. "That's what this is about", Sanders said.

Sanders also ripped into Kara Rowland of Fox News for asking him about the issue.
