Arizona is so hot that flights are being cancelled

At Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport American Airlines regional jets sit on the tarmac as American Airlines says seven regional flights have been delayed and 43 have been canceled because of a heat wave as temperatures climb to near-record highs Tu Major heatwave in south-west US puts elderly and border-crossers at risk

All three of those maximum temperatures are specific to the Phoenix airport; aircraft have different maximum operating temperatures depending on a variety of factors, including airport elevation.

American Airlines said it was going to cancel 38 flights leaving from Phoenix's Sky Harbor airport during the hottest part of the day from 3 p.m.to 6 p.m. "We really aren't expecting any change to the operation with our mainline aircraft".

The temperature in Phoenix, Arizona also touched almost 50 degrees Celsius, . or just 120 degrees Fahrenheit, one of the highest temperatures ever recorded in the city.

The National Weather Service has described the heat wave as "rare, dangerous, and very possibly deadly".

The soaring temperatures are not expected to affect large planes that can handle up to 127 degrees in order to fly.

Santa Clara County officials say a 72-year-old man and an 87-year-old woman died Monday in San Jose, where temperatures reached 94 degrees.

The National Weather Service forecasts Phoenix could reach a scorching 120 degrees on Tuesday.

Temperatures are expected to fall below the 100-degree mark after 8 p.m., so perhaps passengers will be able to travel beyond that.

Arizona is seeing the most stifling temperatures, but the wrath of the heat wave is being felt across Nevada and California as well.

As temperatures climbed into the triple digits across the region, major airlines were forced to delay or cancel flights out of Las Vegas and Phoenix airports, citing difficulty in operating aircraft in extreme heat. The forecast calls for a high of 118 on Monday and 120 on Tuesday in Phoenix. Those jets can't operate when it's 118 degrees Fahrenheit or above.

Phoenix authorities issued several warnings about the dangers of the heat.

The reason it can get so hot in the Southwest is that the humidity is so low. During 1990's 122-degree temperatures, planes were grounded because pilots couldn't take off since temperatures listed in flight manuals didn't go high enough, leaving pilots with no instruction on what settings to use, Arizona's KPNX reported.

The main burn center in Phoenix warned people to be careful around vehicle interiors and pavement and with their pets.

They said on Twitter that it's "like your skin and flesh are burning off".

Associated Press writers Regina Garcia-Cano in Las Vegas and Josh Hoffner contributed to this report. They can lighten the plane's load by selling fewer seats-a tactic American Airlines is using in the Phoenix heat wave-or reducing cargo. "Fortunately for them, many of their long-haul flights arrive and depart in the dead of night, when it's marginally cooler, but they have much to lose if summer temperatures, which already push 120 degrees routinely, begin getting warmer on a routine basis".
