Professor Loses Job for Saying Otto Warmbier Got 'What He Deserved'

College cuts ties with teacher who said Otto Warmbier got North Korea Says Otto Warmbier's Death A 'Mystery To Us As Well'

A professor at the University of DE has not been rehired for posting a harsh status about Otto Warmbier, the UVA student who died after being held prisoner in North Korea.

University of Delaware Professor Katherine Dettwyler wrote on her Facebook page and in the comments section of a National Review article on the left's reaction to Warmbier's death. "I see him crying at his sentencing hearing and think 'What did you expect?'"

Warmbier's death early last week drew condemnations, including from U.S. President Donald Trump, who described the 22-year-old OH native's passing away as a "disgrace".

True, North Korea is not exactly a popular destination for USA tourists.

North Korea denies any mistreatment. He was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor for trying to steal an item bearing a propaganda slogan from his hotel, North Korea state media said.

"Although we had no reason at all to show mercy to such a criminal of the enemy state, we provided him with medical treatment and care with all sincerity on a humanitarian basis until his return to the USA, considering that his health got worse", the Korean Central News Agency said Friday.

When NBC News reached out for comment, Dettwyler cited concerns for her and her family's safety and declined to address the controversy.

"It's her opinion or no opinion", one former student wrote, "and she won't be afraid to express it even if it may offend half the class". "And of course, it's Ottos' parents who will pay the price for the rest of their lives." she said.

The university had issued a June 23 statement disavowing Dettwyler's comments about Warmbier, saying they "do not reflect the values or position of the University of Delaware".

The ex-professor also reportedly indicated that the sympathy aimed at Warmbier would be better suited for people living in North Korea under leader Kim Jong-un who are "not USA citizens". "The University of DE is committed to providing our students, and our community, with an inclusive and supportive atmosphere characterized by respect and civility".

Four days after Dettwyler's post, the University of Virginia released a statement saying that she "will not be rehired to teach at the University in the future".

The comments were shared thousands of times on social media, with some parents stating they would refuse to send their children to the University of DE in protest.

Katherine Dettwyler, 62, said Warmbier "got exactly what he deserved". While his family asserts the boy "brutalized" by the "pariah" regime, doctors have found no signs of physical trauma, nor have they found evidence to support North Korea's claims that he developed a rare form of food poisoning.

But she also doubled down on her remarks about spoiled students, writing that they "think nothing of raping drunk girls at frat parties and snorting cocaine, cheating on exams and threatening professors with physical violence".
