Mutual interest between Cavaliers, Chauncey Billups for front-office role

There might not be a player in all of professional sports that has the level of influence over an organization the way LeBron James does.

That's not to say Lue and Griffin didn't appreciate each other.

James tweeted a thank you message to Griffin later Monday evening that began with the words "If no one appreciated you Griff". And if Griffin's departure against The King's wishes was just the first domino to fall, there could be more shakeups in Cleveland in the near future.

Plucking Billups out of his role as an ESPN analyst is an outrageously risky move that could end LeBron James' second stint in Cleveland after next season. Gilbert said in a statement Monday, June 19, 2017, that the Cavaliers will not extend Griffin's current contract when it expires June 30. There have been reports of him going to the Los Angeles Clippers or the Lakers, and it might happen if James decides to leave Cleveland.

Cleveland's new GM will have to improve a talented but top-heavy roster that includes a lot of aging players who lack athleticism and, most importantly, make staying with the Cavs enticing to James, who is nearly certain to opt out of his contract and become a free agent next summer. James has criticized the decision to get rid of Cavaliers general manager David Griffin.

David Griffin had been the Cavaliers' general manager since 2014.

- Griffin believed he wouldn't be long for the Cavs job, so there was mutual interest between him and the Orlando Magic, Atlanta Hawks and Milwaukee Bucks, all of whom might have given him a better title with more money and more power.

Cindy heads for Gulf landfall
A tropical storm warning was in effect from High Island, Texas, to the Pearl River's mouth along the Louisiana-Mississippi line. The National Hurricane Center on Tuesday afternoon upgraded a weather system in the Gulf of Mexico to Tropical Storm Cindy .

"We shouldn't be shocked after we fired our head coach when we were in first place in the middle of the season", Jefferson said Tuesday, referring to David Blatt's dismissal in January 2016.

Griffin became the Cavaliers' general manager in February 2014 after Chris Grant was sacked, a deal made permanent three months later.

More candidates will appear over the coming days, but for the time being, this is a pivotal period for the Cavs as they look to ensure their future as a contender in the National Basketball Association.

Sources: Cleveland owner Dan Gilbert is targeting Chauncey Billups to become Cavs' top basketball executive.

In the short term, it might cost Gilbert more than he would have paid Griffin, unless he finds an up-and-comer who could move on once Billups learns the intricacies of his position.

According to several reports, the uncertainty of Griffin's future was causing problems with recent trade talks.
