The hire comes as Tesla's lead of Autopilot software, Chris Lattner, earlier this week announced he was leaving the company after six months on the job. In a tweet, he said Tesla simply wasn't a "good fit" for him after all and is looking for other opportunities. "I'm interested to hear about roles for a seasoned engineering leader!" Tesla expected Lattner to "accelerate the future of autonomous driving".
A Tesla spokesperson confirmed Lattner's departure, adding that "Chris just wasn't the right fit for Tesla, and we've decided to make a change".
The tech wiz had only been around for six months before revealing to the world that the electric vehicle maker is not as good of a fit for him as he thought it'd be. Jim Keller, who oversees hardware for Autopilot, will take on Lattner's duties in the meantime. He is taking the post of "Director of AI and Autopilot Vision" and will report directly to Elon Musk, Tesla's chief exec.
Tesla has hired Andrej Karpathy, an artificial intelligence researcher at OpenAI, a non-profit backed by Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk. He had worked at Apple since 2005 and is credited with creating the Swift programming language.
Tesla hires prominent AI researcher as Autopilot chief Lattner leaves
Lattner's exit is just one of the couple of high-profile resignations from Tesla's Autopilot program for the past few months. Karpathy is the company's new Director of AI and Autopilot Vision, but who he is? The latter part makes sense since the company's compute vision system called Tesla Vision is going to support Autopilot, which Keller is now in charge of leading, hardware- and software-wise. Karpathy is a veteran of Alphabet Inc.'s Google, with expertise in deep learning.
Tesla Autopilot program head has chose to leave the company after six months.
Karpathy obtained his PhD from Stanford in Machine Learning with a focus on Deep Learning for Computer Vision and Natural Language Processing a year ago.
